Home PageBirds of Devon and Cornwall Jackdaw - Slapton Ley

Latin name - Corvus monedula

Famous for its habit of 'stealing' bright, shiny objects, the Jackdaw is a small black crow growing up to 34 cm long. Both male and female birds are similar in appearance: black with a grey nape and pale eyes. The young have brown eyes. You can see Jackdaws almost anywhere fields, woods, gardens, parks or, as in this picture, by the coast. They feed on insects, seeds and scraps.
