The information board at the base of the plant reads "Agaves can store gallons of life-sustaining moisture within their leaves. In Central America, some species are used for fibre, some have edible flowers used in tortillas and mescal can be distilled from the steamed heads and central stalks. Tequila, the legal variety of mescal, is made from Agave tequilana."
